To Asparagus – A Springtime Love Sonnet
Asparagus, the harbinger of Spring!
Your spears so fresh and green I do adore.
All year from warmer climes you come by wing,
But local bunches move me to the core.
I see you tall and fresh at farmer’s stand,
And slam the brakes - I hope I do not crash!
Three green backs go into the coffee can,
Then off I drive to home with this great stash.
Tonight I’ll simply steam the spears and then
Melt butter, poured upon them, oh so hot!
Tomorrow I will buy some more of them,
And make a soup to die for in my pot.
Asparagus! Your virtues I do tell.
And yet I do confess -- you make pee smell!
I WROTE THIS POEM FOR AN ENTRY IN THE PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION SPRINGTIME LOVE SONNET CONTEST! WISH ME LUCK! :o)
